How To Stay Cool Without Losing Your Style

May 30, 2026

The secret to dressing for hot weather without defaulting to shapeless basics.

We know we’re not the only ones because it’s the number one struggle we hear from our clients as soon as the temperature soars.

You’re telling us you don’t know how to dress for your style once the mercury rises above 20 degrees. We get it!

In the hotter weather we seem to abandon structure in place of airy comfort whether it suits us or not; we panic buy random holiday clothes we’d never entertain the idea of any other time of the year. We even stop dressing like ourselves, prioritising comfort over identity. And it all feels just a bit off.

The goal here isn’t just to stay cool, it’s to still feel like you.

Why Summer Dressing Feels Harder

When the temperature rises we cast off layers. Layers like blazers, jackets, waistcoats give structure and that all important third item for pulling your look together but they also add warmth and we’re not looking for that right now. Some of the fabrics we normally opt for no longer work for us in the warmer months, for example, if your Chanel suit is your ‘go to’ that textured boucle is going to be way too much in the sunshine. If contoured clothing suits you it may become uncomfortable or clingy through Summer.  Even your ‘go to’ jeans can feel heavy.

Without your usual fit or tailoring you can lose that polish that normally makes you look like the well-turned out human you are. And as clothes get smaller and fabrics get lighter we can feel a little more exposed than we might like. Our confidence can take a dip when faced with less cover-up.

Whatever the reason you find Summer dressing hard the solution is out there to be found. We’re all different so our solutions will also vary. These are some of our top tips for stylish summer dressing without the compromise.

The 3 Secrets To Stylish Summer Dressing

1. Fabric first

Fabric really does matter if keeping your cool is a priority. Where possible opt for linen or linen blends, cotton, lightweight viscose or jersey fabrics. Go for breathable tailoring if you need to maintain a smart look for work or for your style in general. Stay away from clingy fabrics or polyester which will not help you regulate your body temperature and can leave you looking and feeling like a literal hot mess.

2. Clean cuts

It’s easy to go for looser cuts but these don’t need to be completely shapeless. Look for styles that drape effortlessly and create a cleaner silhouette. Follow the same principles you normally would for balancing your body’s natural proportions. Items can still have structure at the shoulders (and waist if that works for you) whilst draping around the lower body.

If you would normally favour oversize items then this will work well; if oversize is not your usual preference then leave it alone. Oversize items can still look elevated when styled with the right accessories for you. Good examples of this could be wide leg trousers with a fitted tank top or conversely an oversized shirt with structured shorts.

Column dresses are on trend for 2026 so find one that works well for your shape and style profile. If dresses are not your thing try matching co-ord sets in colours from your seasonal palette. You can’t beat a bit of swish for elegance and functional airy feels through your summer day so think about movement in your skirts and trousers.

3. Accessories create polish

The simplest outfit is immediately elevated with the right accessories. Choose these in a scale that works well for your physical presence. If you don’t know this it is well worth investing in a style analysis. Easy additions to your outfit, without compromising on your cool, could include metallic sandals, woven or canvas bags, always a pair of statement sunglasses, jewellery of course and belt detail if that works for you. Elasticated woven belts need not feel restrictive.

When it comes to refreshing your wardrobe, your first instinct might be to handle it all yourself. After all, who knows your clothes better than you? But here’s the truth: editing your wardrobe solo can be overwhelming, time-consuming, and — let's be honest — emotionally draining. That’s where working with a stylist can be a total game changer. We have been there too. As stylists ourselves we value the benefit of a second opinion when it comes to separating the emotion from the garment.
