Ever since I bought my fabulous new Marks and Spencer palazzo jeans all I hear is “But what shoes can you wear with them?” and “I’m scared I’ll come flying down the stairs”. I can’t lie, there have definitely been some close shaves but that’s more about the trouser width than the shoe. You just have to learn the ‘palazzo descend’. Kick out your leg as you navigate each stair and take it easy. You’ll soon adopt it as your new way of entering a room.

But let’s talk about one of your most commonly asked questions this season : what shoes actually go with palazzo trousers? If you’ve ever stared longingly at a potential wide-leg purchase only to leave it hanging on the rail due to this footwear puzzle, you’re not alone. But don’t worry — this guide is here to help you step up (not trip up) your confidence, whether you're rocking wide-leg drama or classic denim cool.

But the wrong shoe can totally throw off the look. Here’s what works:

1. White Trainers
Effortless, clean, and cool. Perfect for palazzos but get the trouser length just right please. No 90s frayed hems which have soaked up the contents of every puddle on the pavement. This works best if you have a longer leg. Those of us with shorter legs will need some height in our soles to carry off the wide leg. Add a simple tee and blazer, and you're uber cool.

2. Ankle Boots
These kind of work with most things. You’re likely only going to see the toe but you will see it so choose well in terms of colour and interest. A pointed toe is tres chic. Rounded great for wider feet comfort. Add a cropped quilted jacket for bang on trend.

3. Chunky Sandals or Platforms
Perfect for flares or wide-leg jeans. They balance out the volume and give your legs a little lift. Platforms (and flatforms) are fabulous for giving you extra height if you are on the shorter side. Add a fitted mesh top for sultry styling.

4. Block Heels
Palazzo trousers are long. Block heels help give you height and keep the hem from dragging. Plus, they’re comfy and sturdy — perfect for a full day of sashaying. Add a classic shirt, tucked in or half out, whatever your vibe.

5. Pointed-Toe Flats
Yes, you can go flat! Just make sure the trouser is tailored enough not to swallow your foot. A pointed toe adds elegance and elongates the leg. Can Anyone Wear Yellow?

But wait for it, there’s more to it than that! Shopping sustainably requires you to buy only things you know you will wear so let’s make sure you find the right yellow for you. Buying the wrong tone might leave you looking a tad under the weather and less likely to wear your new purchase again and again.

Let’s explore yellow………..

Yellow is one of the most vibrant and attention-grabbing colours in the spectrum. Often associated with sunshine, happiness, and energy, it is a colour that can evoke strong emotions and make a bold statement. However, many people shy away from wearing yellow, possibly for fear of it not suiting them but potentially also because of that high energy vibe it evokes. Some of us can feel over-stimulated by that so if you are particularly sensitive to colour, yellow can wreak havoc with your neurons and might be best left alone. But aside from that can anyone wear yellow?

The Science

In colour theory, yellow is a primary colour, meaning it cannot be created by mixing other colours. It sits between orange and green on the colour wheel and is known for its high visibility and brightness. Shades of yellow can range from the softest and coolest of primrose to the brightness and boldness of neon with warm golden mustards and corns thrown in for good measure.

Yellow can be paired well with a multitude of colours depending on the desired effect, your palette and your mood. For instance:

Complementary colours : Yellow contrasts beautifully with purple, its direct opposite on the colour wheel for a bold and striking look.
Analogous colours : Pairing yellow with orange and green can create a harmonious yet vibrant appearance.
Neutrals : Your best yellow can work well your neutrals too. Springs can pair with darker neutrals like tan or lighter options like cream. Summers can try with navy or soft whites, Autumns with chocolate brown or marine navy or ivory and finally Winters can opt for charcoal or box fresh white. And there are many more options besides. Always play with combinations within your colour palette. You can’t go far wrong. It’s when we blend hues from different palettes that combinations can sometimes look off.

The Psychology

Yellow is associated with optimism, cheerfulness, and creativity. We think of sunshine, warmth, Spring time, better times and newness. It is known to stimulate our nervous system and boost energy levels so can be great for sportswear and general activity. In branding and design, yellow is used to grab attention and create a sense of warmth and friendliness (think McDonald's and IKEA). However, as previously alluded to, too much yellow can be overwhelming and even cause feelings of anxiety, so balance is key when incorporating it into your home or even your wardrobe.

How to Wear Yellow

The key to wearing yellow successfully lies in choosing the right shade for your skin tone. The best way to find out your skin tone is with a colour analysis. Always find a specially trained expert to perform this for you. This service should not be cheap but doesn’t need to cost the Earth either. Think about how much you might spend on a couple of visits to the hairdresser, consider it as an investment. You will have the knowledge forever and it will save you hundreds in impulse purchases you never wear.

Don’t be fooled by online quizzes. There is only one you and a generic quiz cannot serve every unique individual. An in-person analysis will give you the opportunity to explore lots of colours and to have all your questions answered.

START A CAREER AS A PERSONAL STYLIST

After months of behind the scenes planning, I am delighted to announce the launch of my new business 'The Style and Colour Academy' and the dates for our first course in Colour Analysis!

Having thought long and hard about scaling my business to offer other women the opportunity to train as Personal Stylists, (but not wanting to take this on alone), last December I met with Jo Gaffney (a Worcester based image consultant) and proposed a collaboration.

Drawing together on our wealth of experience in Personal Styling, teaching and mindfulness, we are thrilled to be opening for bookings on this professional and comprehensive colour analysis training course!

Day 1+2: 10-11th June 2024

Day 3+4: 11-12th July 2024

The course is held in our styling studio, based in Hanley Swan, Worcestershire and is a two phased course with a four week interval between Days 1+2 and Days 3 + 4. This will allow you to put the theory from Day 1 + 2 into practise (with the support of 1:1 ZOOM call for any questions which arise) before we meet again for Day 3 + 4.

Taking back control...

Now that the decorations are back in the loft (?), there is no better time for a fresh start, a declutter (or I prefer to use the word 'edit') - it's time to take back control. Of course, this will mean different things for different people. It might be eating more healthily, drinking less alcohol, sorting the finances, organising your wardrobe or clearing out the kitchen cupboards. For me, it's about re-evaluating my priorities in business and ensuring I am working as effectively as possible (oh and all of the above too of course!) .

The need for a 'Wardrobe Edit' - It always tickles me how every time I mention these words to a client, they assume a ‘guilty as charged’ look about them! It’s a well-known statistic that we wear about 20% of our wardrobe, 80% of the time. This means you can very easily have a wardrobe (or multiple) full of clothes but when it comes to going out with friends or loved ones you feel you have nothing to wear. You might create a panic pile on the floor of your bedroom, frantically trying some previously successful outfits but now they are a bit tight, or not appropriate for the time of year or you just don’t feel good in them anymore. This can leave you feeling frustrated and despondent. Editing your clothes allows you to see the wood for the trees (or the ‘feel good’ outfit from the ‘that’ll have to do’). When we can really see what we have in our wardrobe and we know we feel good in it, our energy levels are boosted and we rediscover our confidence.

Meet Leah (below). I met her in a charity shop in Cheltenham. We were both commenting on each other’s purchases and got onto the subject of sustainability whilst paying for our pre-loved items at the till! Leah is an entrepreneur. She’s owned a number of businesses to date, all focussed on listening to the client's needs - much like my Personal Styling. Her latest venture is called The Art of Order , a professional organising service to organise rooms, sometimes whole houses and even workplaces… allowing you to cleanse your space and your mind and gifting you back your time.

I love meeting (and collaborating) with other women in business, so we decided to find out a little bit more about what makes each other tick over a cup of coffee and discovered our businesses have a great deal in common. These are just a few questions I put to Leah to delve a little deeper into her world:

What does a typical client look like for you?

There isn’t a typical client. Every client is individual in their needs. I have had clients who are highly organised, high earning professionals, hoarders, stay at home mums, and even those who are retired who have moved home and have downsized. The clients who utilise my professional organisational services are also a cross spectrum of men and women.

I love the strapline on your website: ‘edit, organise, breathe’. I imagine reorganising a room or someone’s home can be quite cathartic? Yes. Extremely cathartic, and on so many levels. I’m an empath, and I feel, and embrace, the sheer relief that my clients feel once the first and final edit is complete. They start to experience for the first time quite how liberating it is to be free from unnecessary clutter. How uplifting it can be to edit and cleanse your home, allowing your mind some clarity, and that sigh of relief after you’ve conquered something truly satisfying………….the feeling of being able to breathe! Hence my tag line ‘Edit. Organise. Breathe’! As this is exactly what happens, and in precisely that order!

Do you find clients are able to learn from the experience and adopt new ways?

Totally. Every client I have had the opportunity to work with has said how the process has helped them implement new systems in other areas of their home, and now they know the best way to approach it, will continue to do so.

As with any bespoke service, people will often assume it’s out of their reach. Can you give us an indication of what the cost might be to reorganise a bedroom for example?

A typical double wardrobed bedroom, along with drawers, maybe some under bed storage, along with vanity units etc., take approx. 1-1.5 days, based on an 8hr day. A days professional organising costs £240.

People are often shocked at the time it takes to fully edit & re-organise a room; to remove everything from the room, emptying each drawer and every item from the wardrobe, to then sort through each item adding it either to the charity, for sale, or the ‘return to the wardrobe’ pile takes longer than people think. Once the edit is complete I then return the items in an orderly and aesthetically pleasing fashion!

More often than not people fall short of a full edit of their bedroom as they become easily distracted, move on to something else, or lose interest, which in turns leaves the room/wardrobe etc. never being fully edit and re-organised. This is where my services are invaluable. I am very thorough, and I am able to stay focused and on track to ensure that set goals are met. Accountability is key!

There will be a huge push on sustainable fashion again this year, getting value per wear on items you already own or buying second hand to reduce the impact of your purchases. If we can all be a little bit more mindful of waste and more open to re-purposing items, it might just help make the world a better place?

Swimwear to flatter your Body Shape

With the summer holidays fast approaching the prospect of adorning a swimming costume (or God forbid a bikini) can be a little daunting to say the least! So strut your stuff with confidence this summer by finding out the most flattering swimwear for your body shape using my style guide below...

Triangle (pear shaped)

Wider at the hips than the shoulders, ideally, we are trying to rebalance proportions by creating more interest on the upper body. This might be an off the shoulder style, or a bold print worn on the upper body and a plain colour on your lower body. Opt for larger style bottoms and halter neck styles with wider straps .

Rectangle/Square (a thletic )

Your body lines are overall straighter. If you are small busted, look out for frills and ruffles. Details such as these (or embellishments) will also extend the shoulder line and when worn with bikini bottoms which have ties at the side, can give the illusion of a curvier body. Costumes with cut out details around the waist will also achieve this effect.

Hourglass

With a fuller bust and more curvaceous hips consider high-waisted and retro styles. Detail at the waistline such as a tie or a belt will accentuate your curves. Keep your upper and lower body balanced with similarly sized tops/straps and bottoms.

Round (apple)

Your hips and shoulders are equal, but you are wider around the waist. Consider wrap details, ruching or shirring and prints to give definition to the waist. A plunging neckline will help slim your torso and use of diagonal or vertical stripes can create the illusion of a longer body.

Inverted Triangle (strawberry)

If you have broader shoulders and are smaller at the hips then consider prints on your lower body and a block colour on the upper body. High-waisted styles or ties at the side can rebalance the shoulders and try to keep straps more substantial as spaghetti style straps will only emphasize your broadness.

Halter Neck Styles

There are two types of halter neck styles, those which start from the side of the bust and those which start from the middle of the chest . If you have broad shoulders, then opt for the second style to avoid accentuating the broadness. If you are more pear shaped, then opt for the first style to help re-balance your hips.

Not sure about the big reveal?

High-waisted bikinis are a great way to feel supported whilst allowing you to show off a little more skin and those with a belt detail add an extra element of impact to the outfit. Costumes with an illusion element (some sheer fabric) can work brilliantly to give a sense of bikini confidence without feeling exposed.

And if you are uncomfortable about bearing any more skin than necessary, a one shoulder costume can be a great way to add a bit of femininity to a swimsuit (just watch out for the tan lines!)

And some final thoughts...

For ladies with a fuller bust, it is really worth considering costumes or bikinis with bra sizing and adjustable straps. Styles with zips provide a vertical line down the front of your body, which will visually elongate your torso. Plunge necklines will have the same effect.

The importance of colour and pattern should not be overlooked. It’s amazing the optical illusions you can achieve with colour-blocking so look out for these details in your prints and don't forget to match the size of the prints with the scale of your body.

If proportionally your legs are shorter than your upper body, opt for a high cut style. If your legs are longer than your upper body opt for a low cut leg to help rebalance your proportions.

And if the thought of swimwear still fills you with dread, accessorising your outfit is a great way to divert attention from the wearer. Cover-ups are very on trend and can provide you with an additional layer of confidence on the beach. Over-sized sunglasses, a floppy hat, a bright beach bag or a pair of espadrilles will all add interest and can create the perfect distraction!

Doing my own colours.... 'Having your colours done' is not a phrase which means something to everyone. And the 'seasonal system' can appear misleading... people often think if they are a 'Winter' this has a reflection on their character (cold or dark!). So let me enlighten you a little...

Colour Analysis is actually something which when you've experienced it, is revolutionary. When you understand which colours work for you, you will save money by longer buying clothes which you never wear, you will save time choosing your outfits in the morning, and most importantly, you will feel more confident in how you look. What's not to like?!

The process involves working through a series of fabric samples (drapes) and analysing which work best for you, in good natural daylight and without make up. It is about finding the colours which best complement your natural colouring and consequently enhance your complexion.

How good are clothing subscription boxes? Stitch Fix and Lookiero reviewed.

With an increasing popularity in clothing subscription boxes, I was intrigued to see how successful their selections were and whether the £10 per styling fee was worth the investment.

If you are new to subscription boxes, this is how they work. For your styling fee of £10 you receive five items of clothing in the post (which can include shoes). You then have seven days to try them at home. Returns are free (as is shipping) - the only money you stand to lose is your £10 styling fee if you choose to return all items. I signed up to STITCH FIX and Lookiero as the two leading names in this relatively new market and these are my findings:

Overall, I did enjoy being shown items which I wouldn’t normally consider… AND it was fun to have a try on at home with someone else doing the research for me. If you are someone who either simply doesn’t enjoy shopping or has no time to shop, then it’s worth a consideration. They do allow a lot of opportunity for you to fine tune their selections and it would allow you to introduce a new item or two of clothing to your wardrobe every now and again (you can choose the frequency of your deliveries). I however, love to shop ! And I love to shop when I know there is something missing from my wardrobe, only buying with purpose. I feel that these services could easily encourage unnecessary spending (I’ve demonstrated that myself!) and from a styling point of view, probably half of the items weren’t particularly well suited to me.

Clothing subscription boxes will provide you with some new and on trend looks - BUT after each delivery you will be no more informed of what works for you and why, than you were at the start of the process. Selecting the right look for you requires consideration of your personality and your lifestyle requirements. And let's not forget, feeling confident in your clothes does NOT have to be about buying more.

The Art of Disguise

Disguising an expanding waistline – my style secrets…

Whilst some people gained weight during lockdown, I put my mind to loosing a little. I think it was something I could have control over and it made me feel better about the chaos and uncertainty around me. But since restrictions have lifted, wining and dining has become my new normal. I know some people may look at these images and feel I have nothing to worry about, but this is about personal comfort zones and comfortable is something which several of my clothes are currently not! My wearable wardrobe is shrinking before my eyes, so until I get back into a healthier routine, I’II need to think creatively with my outfit choices.

These are my styling secrets to help disguise some of the summer holiday indulgences…

Smock dresses – our saving grace this summer! Loose fitting, cool and comfortable and not a muffin top in sight.
Shirt dresses – shirt dresses are so on trend this summer. By tying the belt above your tummy this keeps the focus on your slimmest part. A slightly fuller skirt can help to disguise the extent of the tummy bulge too!
Try keeping bottoms more fitted and tops looser (or oversized) – stretchy high waisted jeggings (best in a relatively thick denim) will help secure any spare tyres. Team with a bubble hem top or tops tied at the bottom to skim over (not cling to) your stomach.
Be brave with prints! A print will provide an excellent distraction from unwanted lumps or bumps – always a winner.

If you are anything like me, my weight fluctuates throughout the year. It doesn’t mean you need to buy more clothes, or size up. Personal styling is about finding the most flattering clothes to make the most of our bodies, so have a play with the clothes in your wardrobe to find your most flattering combinations.

Opening your eyes to Charity Shopping

Charity clothes shopping - why everyone should be doing it!

Allocating some time to a charity shop spree provides a guilt free way to shop. You can put your hands on a whole variety of colours (irrespective of the current trends) and find some truly inspiring items to add excitement to your wardrobe for a fraction of the price of the high street. And the best part is that it encourages you to be more daring... if it's not right when you get it home, it doesn't matter! You've contributed to a bigger, better cause.

I've done a number of face-to-face colour appointments over the past couple of weeks and talked to all my clients about red. EVERYONE can wear it but it's all about finding the right tone. The 'right' red for me is a pink (not orange) tone so I was over the moon to find this dress on a charity shop run. Hunting through charity shops was a regular past time when I was younger.... I would find some fantastic fabrics in dated styles and 'up style' them with my Grandma's old sewing machine. Well, I don't get there quite as often, but if I can, I still love to mooch. Last week I popped into Acorns and found this beautiful red dress (just £7) and and gorgeous chunky, large scale, silver bracelet (£2)! LOVE THEM! Who wouldn't? Style it up with an animal scarf or a woven belt, a bright red lipstick and BANG! Just £9 for a a new outfit and all to a good cause.

Feeling brave? Why not try out some print clashing!

If you are someone who likes to play it safe, it’s time to push yourself out of your comfort zone and experiment with your wardrobe! Admittedly, print clashing takes a little bit of courage but it is great fun and very on trend.

The ‘rules’ are simple – there are none! In fact, the more courageous you are, the more considered the outfit will appear. However, if the concept is new to you, I would suggest trying the following to ease you in:

Stripes worn with florals (or animal print with spots) creates an easy start and these are items which most of us will have in our wardrobes. You can even just use a floral scarf with a striped top to get you going.
Use complementary colours (if you are not sure what these are, have a look at my earlier blog on colours which work well together.
Separating the clash with a waist belt suggests a sense of informed decision in your look and can add the perfect finishing touch.

Once you’ve found your confidence with this look, you can begin to consider the benefits of flattering print placement too! A vertical line down the middle of a blouse or dress is great for larger busts as it elongates and narrows. Broken stripes on an outfit causes confusion to the eye and can create a distraction from a rounded tummy. In fact, prints in general can be hugely successful in disguising unwanted lumps and bumps!

BEWARE!!! This look does come with one warning! Trying to make the prints match has the potential to leave you with an outfit where onlookers are not entirely sure whether you are making a statement or got dressed in the dark! Print clashing is about mixing it up with CONFIDENCE, so if you still feel nervous but are desperate to give it a try, keep an eye out for the garments which have been made featuring two prints of different patterns or colours already for you.

Complementary Colours - Which colours work well together?

Are you bored of wearing the same colour combinations?

Even if you believe you have a good sense of the colours which suit you, you may well find that you still gravitate to the same few options (which you can probably count on one hand)? Understanding how colour works and more importantly, how we can combine different colours can help transform the way you wear your wardrobe and as a result, transform your confidence when you walk out of your front door. Here are a few colour combinations to consider...

Complementary colours are those which are opposing on the colour wheel. It is a high contrast and dramatic look and demonstrates you know how to wear colour with confidence! Some classic combinations of complementary colours are blue and orange, yellow and purple or green and red.

Analogous colours are those which sit next to each other on the colour wheel. This combination is often found in nature and creates a calming effect so it's great for any occasion in which you would like to appear friendly, approachable or just relaxed in your environment.

Triadic harmonies involve selecting three equally spaced colours from the colour wheel. For example, red, yellow and blue or green, orange and purple. Choose one of the colours to be the dominant option and use the remaining two as accent colours for a beautifully vibrant look.

Monochromatic colour choices are different shades of a single colour. This is great for a soft and blended look and can exude a sense of quality, currently popular with different neutral shades on the high street.

So I'm setting you a challenge! Have a look in your wardrobe and then using this colour wheel, try to create one or two of these colour combinations. If you can, wear them tomorrow! We are all getting bored of the rain so let's brighten someone's day ;-) x

Jumpsuits - There is a style out there for everyone!

One of this season's MUST HAVE items!

Jumpsuits - what's not to like?! Comfortable, practical and most of all stylish, jumpsuits feature in some shape or form in just about every shop at the moment! The best thing is that you don't need to be young, skinny, or tall to carry them off - you just need to find the right style for you. So where to start with SO much choice? Here are some style tips to help you out...

The first thing to think about is your body shape. If you have straighter lines to your silhouette opt for a cotton, linen or denim fabric with a straighter cut to the fabric. If you have curvier lines opt for a cotton mix, chiffons and jersey for a more floaty look to work with your curves.

Then think about your body proportions - are you longer in the upper body or lower body? This will help you decide whether you should opt for a style with a waist belt, a hip belt or whether you are better without a belt at all.

Finallly, consider your shoulders. If they are narrow opt for a style with capped sleeves to visually balance them with your hips. If you have broad shoulders, avoid halter neck or off the shoulder styles.

And let's not forget the resurgence of the good old dungarees! I recently bought a pair and I can't help smiling when I wear them and walk with a spring in my step. I think it's because I feel a little bit like a child again and that is just so much fun!

Will I suit a fringe?

With fringes still hot this Autumn you may be wondering if you should take the plunge? This is no little decision so if you are nervous as to whether a fringe is for you, the answer lies in the proportions of your face. Try this top tip to help you decide…

A well-proportioned face is divided into three equal sections. Place your thumb under your chin and your first finger under your nose – keep that measurement and place your thumb under your nose – keep that measurement again and replace your finger positioning with your thumb. Are the three sections equal? If the answer is ‘yes’ then you’ve got the green light – go for it! However, if your forehead is shorter than the other two sections then adding a fringe probably won’t do you any favours.

Style involves us thinking carefully about where we are putting horizontal lines across our face and body as they can visually shorten (and widen) that area. Which means that if you are shorter in your forehead, a fringe will just accentuate this and not help to achieve that well-balanced look.

What colour suits me?

This season is all about the neutrals. Greys, taupe, golds, silvers, creams, off-whites, peaches, apricots, beige and pale browns. These colours can exude quality, class and have a timeless appeal BUT beware - they are not for everyone! So how can you discover what colours suit you best?

Well, I don’t want to do myself out of business here, however I am willing to give away a few trade secrets… just a little taster to whet your appetite! When it comes to colour, the most important consideration is the colour worn nearest to your face. To help you get an idea as to what might work for you, you’ll need to give some thought to the following three areas…

If you have cool undertones to your skin, by wearing warm colours (those which have more of a yellow base) the yellow/warm undertones will reflect on to your skin, making you look sallow (a little bit like when you hold a buttercup under your chin to see if you like butter). And of course, the reverse applies, if you have warm undertones and wear blue-based colours, this will often drain your complexion.

Then there is the question of light or dark. As a general rule of thumb – if your hair colour is fair, then lighter colours will be more complementary and less over-powering. If your hair is dark, then you will be able to carry colours with more depth. There are of course, many in-betweens and exceptions to this rule but as I said… this is just a little taster.

And lastly comes the question of bright or softer, more muted tones. This is the toughie as to wear brighter colours can be so uplifting and a great confidence boost. The catch 22 is that you need to know they suit you to give you the confidence to wear them in the first place! How do you know? Well, if you have a low contrast look about you, (the easiest example to give here is brown eyes and brown hair) then you will probably find that bright colours next to your face are over-powering. On the other hand, someone with a high contrast look (think Sophie Ellis-Bextor), is in danger of looking flat and unexciting in softer colours and can carry something brighter.
